Intervista a Bastian Günther, regista e sceneggiatore di One of These Days premiato allo Zurich Film Festival e incentrato sul contest Hands on a Hard Body Bastian Günther (Hachenburg, 1974) è un regista tedesco trapiantato negli Stati Uniti, che adesso si alterna fra Austin e Berlino. Bastian Günther (Hachenburg, 1974) is a German director and an American naturalized citizen, living between Austin and Berlin. After his studies in Social Sciences, he trained as a director in the known film school DDFB (Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin) and debuted in 2007 with the feature film Autopiloten, premiered in the category German perspectives of the Berlinale; after Autopiloten he released in 2011 the documentary California City and in 2013 the thriller Houston, both set in America. In 2020 Günther came back to the Festival of Berlin to present One of These Days, an atypical drama movie set in Texas and centered on an endurance contest which actually took place for many editions, the Hands On an Hard Body: a dozen of competitors have to stand around a brand new pickup truck donated by the organizer, keeping one hand on the car without being allowed to take it away or to sleep – the last one who keeps his hand on the pick-up, after several days immobile, will win the truck. Quando e perché hai fatto questa scelta? Quali sono state le tue prime impressioni dell’America e come credi che gli Stati Uniti siano cambiati dai tempi del tuo arrivo? Bastian Günther: Sono venuto qui in Texas una dozzina di anni fa. Mia moglie è americana e per questo motivo abbiamo deciso di vivere fra l’America e la Germania, e prima del Coronavirus facevamo continuamente avanti e indietro. Rispetto ad altre località del Texas Austin è molto diversa, qui si vive in una sorta di “bolla”: Austin è una città molto libera e artistica, piena di democratici e liberali, ma quando guidi fuori da Austin, anche solo per pochi chilometri, vedi bandiere che inneggiano a Trump, striscioni Pro-Life, adesivi dei Repubblicani sulle macchine e via dicendo. Per me Austin non è molto cambiata negli anni, ma penso che le differenze siano soprattutto fra le città e le zone rurali, e questo si nota soprattutto durante le elezioni. Le grandi città hanno votato tutte per i Democratici, ma le campagne, le zone rurali e le città più piccole hanno votato tutte per i Repubblicani. Si tratta insomma di una situazione molto polarizzata. Su quanto l’America è cambiata in questi dodici anni, io credo che sia diventato molto più difficile avere un dialogo con una persona che ha diverse posizioni politiche dalle tue. Credo sia sempre stato difficile in America avere un dialogo politico, perché ci sono solo due partiti e devi sceglierne uno; ma sicuramente è stato Trump a rendere questa divisione più forte e insuperabile, con la sua retorica estrema e il suo modo di polarizzare i suoi seguaci contro un “nemico” comune. You were born in Germany, but you moved to Austin. Why and when did you make that choice? What were your first impressions of the country on your arrival and how much do you think the U.S. has changed since then? Bastian Günther: I came here in Texas about 12 years ago. My wife is American and so at some point we decided to live in both countries, in Germany and here in Texas, and before Coronavirus spread, we used to go back and forth as often as we could. Austin is very different from other areas of the state of Texas, you feel as if you live in a sort of ‘bubble’: is a very free and artistic city, full of Democrats and Liberals, but when you drive outside of Austin, even if only for a few miles, you immediately come across to pro-Trump flags, Pro-Life posters, Republican adhesives on the cars and so on. To my perception, Austin has not changed that much since I came here, but I think that the differences are mainly between cities and rural areas, as you can clearly see during the presidential election period. All the big cities voted for the Democrats, whereas the countryside, the rural areas and the smaller cities voted for the Republicans. This is a very polarized situation. In America I think that political debate has never been easy, because there are only two parties and you have to choose one; however I think that in the last years it has become way more difficult to have a dialogue with a person who has different political views from yours. I think that Trump made this division stronger and unsurpassable, his rhetoric and his way to inflame his followers made even more difficult the chance to have a constructive dialogue. One of These Days è ispirata a una vera gara di resistenza, celebre in Texas, che era già stata oggetto di un celebre documentario del 1997, diretto da S.R. Bindler. Lo stesso Robert Altman stava lavorando a un film ispirato al documentario al momento della sua morte. Come e quando hai sentito per la prima volta della “Hands on a Hard Body”, e perché hai deciso di ispirarti alla gara per farne un film di finzione? Bastian Günther: Ho pensato per la prima volta di farci un film intorno al 2009. La “Hands on a Hard Body” si teneva a Longview, qui in Texas. Il documentario era stato realizzato nel 1997 e in Texas era diventato subito una sorta di film di culto, per due anni venne programmato ininterrottamente nei cinema di Austin. Mia moglie allora viveva già ad Austin e un giorno mi parlò del documentario e della competizione. Sono rimasto colpito dalla competizione, ho fatto delle ricerche e ho letto che nel 2005 un giovane che ha abbandonato la gara dopo 45 ore, è entrato in supermercato portando con sé alcune pistole, ma ha trovato la polizia pronto a fermarlo alla porta di uscita e si è sparato, come poi accade anche nel mio film. L’ho trovata una cosa completamente triste e folle. Nel documentario il team è molto gioioso e bizzarro, e fa sembrare la “Hands on a Hard Body” come una cosa fondamentalmente divertente da fare: non aveva uno sguardo critico su quella competizione, che invece a me sembra più che altro una tortura, perché di fatto si invitavano persone senza soldi a comprare una macchina tenendoci la mano per notti e giorni, facendolo passare come un intrattenimento per i passanti che prendendo un cocktail, guardano per un’oretta e poi tornano a casa, insomma, un modo di sfruttare persone povere per divertimento. Rispetto al documentario io ho assunto questa ottica decisamente più critica, andando a mostrare come accanto al lato divertente ci fosse anche una dimensione dello sfruttamento. Quando ho letto di quel ragazzo che si era sparato per lo stress – se non dormi e hai alti e bassi mentali mentre gli altri sfidanti cercano di confonderti e demoralizzarti, se non sei mentalmente molto stabile non c’è da sorprendersi che accada – ho subito capito che quello doveva essere il cuore del film, proprio perché ero critico della competizione. One of These Days is inspired by a true competition already documented in a famous documentary from 1997 by S.R. Bindler, from which Robert Altman was developing a feature film at the time of his death. How and when you first heard of Texan Hands on a Hard Body contest, and why did you decide to make a narrative movie out of it? Bastian Günther: I thought to make a film about it around 2009. The competitions Hands on a Hard Body actually took place in Longview, Texas, for several years. The documentary directed by Bindler was realized in 1997 and it immediately became a cult movie in Texas, for two years it was screened in movie theatres here in Austin. By then my wife was already living here, so one day she told me about the documentary and the competition. I made some researches and I read that in 2005 a young man gave up after 45 hours, he went in a supermarket, bought some guns, found the police waiting for him at the exit doors and shot himself. I thought it was a completely sad and mad news. In the documentary the team is depicted as joyful and bizarre, and this makes the competition as a somewhat funny thing to do: Bindler’s movie surely has not a critical look at the Hands On, which instead I think is almost a torture, because you are actually inviting people with no money to buy a car by keeping their hands on it for nights and days, and presenting it as an entertainment for the passers-by who look for an hour while drinking their cocktails. It seemed to me that the competition took advantage of unprivileged people for fun, and that beyond entertainment there was also a part of exploitation in the show. When I read about that young man who shot his head due to the stress – if you can’t sleep, you have mental highs and downs as the others try to deceive and demotivate you, if you are not mentally stable it is something which can happen and it happened – I understood that this had to be the heart of the movie, because I was critical of the competition. Bastian Günther: Gli attori erano tutti professionisti, ma ci siamo subito dati come criterio quello di fare un casting di attori tutti provenienti dal Sud degli Stati Uniti. Il Sud è una regione molto particolare, con tutto un suo immaginario e uno slang molto marcato: volevo solo attori del Sud per rendere il più credibile possibile la rappresentazione di una piccola cittadina dove tutti si conoscono, con i suoi modi di dire e le sue ossessioni. Mi fa piacere però che ti sia venuto il dubbio che fossero non professionisti perché era proprio questo quello che cercavo, persone che sembrassero vere. L’unico attore che non proveniva dal Sud è Joe Cole, che era inglese ma mi piaceva molto perché da una parte può sembrare molto innocente, quasi infantile nella sua espressione, ma dall’altra ha un lato molto aggressivo che di tanto in tanto emerge, e questo era una perfetta descrizione del personaggio di Kyle. Non essendo americano però Joe aveva un dialect coach sul set ogni giorno, e già da settimane prima dell’inizio delle riprese ha lavorato con me sui suoi dialoghi per imparare lo slang. Abbiamo avuto lunghe sessioni di casting, facendo venire molte persone a New Orleans per essere provinate. Una volta deciso che avremmo selezionato solo attori nati o cresciuti al Sud, si trattava essenzialmente di fare il giusto mix di persone intorno al truck: afro-americani, bianchi, uomini, donne, persone tutte diverse fra loro perché è così che veramente è la “Hands On”, un grande mix di etnie e personalità. Costruire il gruppo è stato come montare un puzzle, ma mi è piaciuto molto lavorarci assieme al casting director. Sapevamo che questo sarebbe stato uno step molto importante della realizzazione del film, il luogo dove si tiene la competizione è quasi un palco perché buona parte del film è ambientata lì e vediamo continuamente queste persone. Ci serviva un team che lavorasse bene insieme, anche perché a volte introducevamo delle piccole improvvisazioni e andavamo avanti per vedere cosa succedeva. The cast of One of These Days mixes some quite famous TV actors such as Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders, Black Mirror), Carrie Preston (True Blood) and Callie Hernandez (Too Old to Die Young, a minor role in La La Land) with less known faces and newcomers. How did the casting process work? Did you choose some non-professional actors from the town where you shot? Bastian Günther: The actors were all professionals, but we decided to cast actors who came from the South of the United States, who were either born there or grew up there. The South of the U.S. is a very special place, with his own imaginary and a very strong slang: I wanted to have only actors from the South to make as believable as possible the depiction of a little town in the South, where everybody knows each other. I am glad about the fact that you imagined that some of the actors could be non-professionals, because that was exactly what I was looking for. The only actor who is not from the South is Joe Cole, who is English; I liked him very much because on one hand he may seem very innocent, almost childish, but on the other hand he has also a very aggressive side which can gradually emerge, and that was what I specifically wanted for the character of Kyle. However, Joe had a dialect coach on the set every day, and weeks before the shootings began, he had already started working with me on his dialogues to improve the slang. We had long casting sessions, and we invited many people to come to New Orleans and audition. Once we decided to have only people of the South, all we had to do was to create the right mix of people around the truck: Afro-Americans, Caucasians, men, women, all the people who had to be different from each other because that was what the real Hands On was, a mixture of different races and backgrounds. It was like making a puzzle to select and build this group of people, but I really enjoyed working on it together with the casting director. We knew that this would be a very important step in the realization of the movie, because the location where the competition took place was almost like a stage, most of the movie was set there and we continuously saw those people, so we needed a team who also worked well together, especially since sometimes we introduced little improvisations and let the scene go on to see what happened. Quali erano le tue reference e le tue ispirazioni, a livello di film ma anche di fotografie e di romanzi, per rappresentare la provincia americana? Nel passato tu hai diretto anche documentari: quanto credi che questo abbia influenzato la realizzazione di One of These Days? Bastian Günther: Ho rivisto Non si uccidono così anche i cavalli? mentre lavoravo alla sceneggiatura, ma non so quanto One of These Days ne sia stato influenzato. La maggiore influenza sul film è stato il vero evento, la vera competizione che si svolgeva qui in Texas. Preparando il film ho incontrato la persona che ha organizzato la competizione in quegli anni, ho parlato con lei per tre ore riprendendo la conversazione, e ho anche parlato con delle persone che erano attorno al truck quando quel ragazzo nel 2005 si è sparato. Un’influenza visiva è stato sicuramente il lavoro del fotografo Stephen Shore, le foto che ha scattato negli anni sessanta e settanta quando viaggiava in America con la sua famiglia e voleva semplicemente documentare questo lungo viaggio in macchina, Shore è sicuramente un’influenza che porto sempre con me quando faccio film o foto. Ho girato dei documentari, uno, California City, era in realtà a metà strada fra documentario e cinema di finzione, ma non so quanto la mia esperienza come documentarista abbia influito sul mio modo di dirigere One of These Days, forse un po’ effettivamente sì. Per One of These Days avevamo una sceneggiatura molto precisa a cui restavamo fedeli, ma, come per ogni film, sono aperto alle idee che possono portare gli attori e cerco di dare loro molto spazio per sperimentare. Ogni mattina facevamo prove e loro arrivavano con nuove idee, le provavamo e se andavano bene le inserivamo nella scena che dovevamo girare. Intorno al truck facevamo delle take piuttosto lunghe, veniva spontaneo fare delle improvvisazioni. Su trentaquattro giorni di riprese ben diciannove riguardavano la competizione ed erano tutti in quella location: improvvisare è inevitabile perché se hai venti personaggi la sceneggiatura non può dirti ogni dettaglio su ogni personaggio in ogni momento. Per questo motivo durante il casting ho cercato persone giocose e capaci di sperimentare, che magari avessero avuto anche esperienze teatrali. Forse aver lavorato a documentari mi ha aiutato un po’, ma era innanzitutto un film di finzione e sapevamo che a un certo punto io e il mio operatore di macchina dovevamo lasciar andare e lasciare che i personaggi guidassero la camera, riprendere alcune reazioni, fare il controcampo di conseguenza, cercare di recuperare piccole reazioni come pick-up, affidare a loro tutto, vedere che succede e raccogliere qualche frammento in montaggio. Two writings on the hands of Joe Cole’s character (“Don’t” and “Move”) recall the tattoos of The Night of the Hunter villain performed by Robert Mitchum, and several critics have compared One of These Days to 1969 drama They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? by Sidney Pollack, set in the Depression-era. What were your references and your inspirations, in terms of movies, photographs and novels, to depict the American province? In the past you also directed documentaries: do you think that this influenced the realization of One of These Days? Bastian Günther: I watched again They Shoot Horses as I was working on the script of One of These Days, but I do not know how much my movie was influenced by it. The most important influence of the movie was the real event, the real competition. While I was preparing One of These Days, I met the woman who organized the competition, I spoke with her for three hours, and I talked as well to other people who were around the truck when the incident happened. In terms of visual references, I always bring in my mind the photographs of Stephen Shore, especially his photos from late Sixties and Seventies when he travelled to America with his own family and just wanted to document that great road trip. Yes, I shot a documentary, one of which, California City, was actually halfway between a documentary and a scripted fiction movie, and this might have influenced a bit my directorial style, but I do not know how much. For the work on One of These Days we had a very precise script to which we kept faithful, but, as for any movie, I kept myself open to the ideas that the actors might bring and I tried to give them room to experiment. Every morning we had rehearsals and the actors came in bringing new ideas, we tried their suggestions and if they worked, we put them inside the scene. It was unavoidable to improvise a bit during these long takes around the truck: on 34 days of shootings, 19 concerned the competition, all this in one location. If your movie features twenty characters the script cannot tell you every detail about every character in every moment, so you have to improvise. For this reason, during the casting I looked for playful people, capable of experimenting and who already had also theatrical experiences. Perhaps having worked on documentaries helped me a bit, but One of These Days was a fiction movie and my cameraman and I knew that, at a certain point, we had to let the scene go and let the characters guide the camera, seeing what happened and collecting some pieces. Cosa credi che caratterizzi la relazione degli americani verso le loro automobili? Secondo te, perché l’elemento della macchina ha una pregnanza cinematografica e simbolica tanto forte? Bastian Günther: Soprattutto in America, e forse soprattutto nelle zone rurali dell’America, le persone si identificano con le loro macchine, e la macchina diventa un’espressione molto forte della loro identità. È legato a una certa idea di controllo della propria vita e di controllo dell’immagine che si dà o si vuole dare di sé. Verso il finale del film, dato che il film è così tanto su quel pick-up, e tutti trasferiscono sogni, desideri e bisogni su quell’oggetto, ho avvertito il bisogno che la macchina parlasse: ovviamente non è macchina parlante, quando parla è una sorta di riflesso dell’anima di Kyle, che ha concentrato tutti i suoi pensieri sul trattore perché spera di lasciare la città e di ripartire da zero, e crede che per farlo sia necessaria la macchina, per guidare lontano. La macchina è un elemento molto cinematografico e ha una lunga storia, e anche nei miei film precedenti molte scene erano ambientate in macchina: se ci sono due persone in auto che stanno litigando, non possono uscire, l’automobile diventa una camera a pressione soprattutto per chi sta alla guida, deve attraversare il conflitto fino in fondo e soprattutto non perdere il controllo. Forse davvero non manca molto a macchine parlanti. Il film cerca di essere sempre molto realistico, solo nell’ultimo capitolo prende un’altra piega, ma serve per mostrare quante speranze Kyle ha riposto nella vittoria della macchina e cosa pensa di sé stesso, che non può dare quanto vorrebbe alla famiglia. The protagonists of One of These Days share a fetishistic relationship towards the pick-up they are fighting for, and in one of the last scenes of the movie one of them, in a psychotic hallucination, even talks to it. At least another of your previous works, Autopiloten, dealt with the imaginary of cars and highways. What do you think characterizes the relationship of Americans towards their cars? In your opinion, why the car has such a cinematic and symbolic strength? Bastian Günther: Especially in the U.S., and perhaps especially in the rural areas of the U.S., people identify with their cars, and the car becomes a very strong expression of their own identity. The car is connected to an idea of controlling your life and controlling the image you want to give of yourself. Especially near the ending of the movie, as it is so much focused on the cars and specifically on the truck, and every character puts dreams, desires and needs in the objects, I sensed as the car had to talk: obviously it is not the car itself that is speaking, but it is a sort of reflection of Kyle’s soul, who has focused all his thoughts on the truck because he hopes to leave the city and start over but he thinks that he needs the car to be able to do that, to drive far away. Surely the car is a very cinematic element, with a long history in movies, and also in my previous works many scenes were set in a car: if two people are in a car and argue, they cannot get out of it, it is like a pressure chamber, especially the driver is unable to leave, he has to go through the conflict but without losing control. One of These Days tries to be realistic during the entire movie, but only in the last chapter it takes another direction because the scene of the speech with the truck needs to show how many hopes Kyle has in the victory of the car, and what he thinks about himself and the fact that he cannot give what he wants to his family. Joe Cole in One of These Days (Credits: Bastian Günther) La circolarità è un concetto su cui il tuo film sembra costruito: svariati movimenti di macchina, soprattutto all’inizio del film, sono circolari, i concorrenti stanno in piedi in cerchio attorno al pick-up, la stessa struttura narrativa del film è a suo modo circolare, dal momento che l’epilogo torna indietro a prima dell’inizio della gara, esplorando più a fondo la vita e le motivazioni di uno dei personaggi. Il simbolo del cerchio trasmette una sensazione di sicurezza ma anche di chiusura: credi sia un’efficace rappresentazione della provincia americana dei nostri giorni? Bastian Günther: Io francamente non pensavo consciamente al cerchio, ma in qualche modo hai colto il punto. Movimenti di macchina a cerchio, o persone che camminano a cerchio, tutto questo può essere metafora della quotidianità. Anche nel finale, quando il film rivela di avere una struttura circolare, per me il senso non è tanto quello di chiudere quanto quello di tornare all’inizio e far terminare il film con Maria, sua moglie, che cammina verso Kyle e sembra quasi che possa iniziare un’altra storia, perché la visione si conclude con una scena che sembra molto felice se non sai come va a finire la storia, ma siccome hai già visto tutto il film diventa triste. Maria è quella che porterà il peso di quello che accade per tutta la vita, ma con quel finale il film apre anche una nuova storia. Era una cosa a cui tenevo molto, che il film facesse un grande respiro alla fine e si aprisse invece di avere un finale conclusivo. Volevo più che altro avere un finale aperto che permettesse alla storia di andare avanti. Circularity is a concept from which your movie seems to be built on: some camera movements are circular, the competitors stand around the car in a circle as well, the narrative structure itself is somehow circular, as the epilogue actually comes back before the contest started, exploring more in depth the life and the motivations of one of the characters. The symbol of the circle conveys a feeling of security, but also of closeness: is American province a closed loop? Bastian Günther: Frankly, I was not consciously thinking at a circle, but somehow you got a point. Circular camera movements, or people walking in circles, all of this may be a metaphor for the everyday life. Also, in the ending, the circular structure which ends the movie, to me was not really meant to conclude it rather than coming back to the beginning of the film and make it end with Maria, his wife, walking towards Kyle. Here it seems that a totally different story may begin, we actually end with a scene that seems very happy if you do not know how it ends, but as you saw the whole film, the ending is sad. She is the one who will bring the weight of what happened for all her life. This was something I was very determined to get, as if the movie made a long breath at the end and opened up instead of having a conclusive ending. I actually wanted to have an open ending which allowed the story to move forward. I concorrenti della gara “Hands On”, nel tuo film di finzione, sembrano riflettere piuttosto bene la realtà della Rush Belt di oggi. All’inizio del processo di scrittura, quando hai deciso chi sarebbero stati i personaggi che, nel film, avrebbero cercato di vincere il pick-up, hai provato a rappresentare realisticamente l’America contemporanea? Fra Trump e Biden, per chi voterebbero i tuoi personaggi? Bastian Günther: Dal momento che vivo in Texas da quasi dodici anni, penso di avere una buona comprensione del Sud e delle persone che vivono qui, e incontro ogni giorno persone come quelle rappresentate nel film, soprattutto in campagna, ma anche ad Austin. Vedi tutti questi personaggi diversi, con background diversi. Credono in Dio, soprattutto nelle campagne la dimensione religiosa è molto forte anche se ci sono molte diverse chiese e congregazioni. Non volevo che i personaggi fossero solo cliché, volevo che ogni personaggio apparisse reale, con un suo piccolo arco e un suo background. Il documentario di Bindler è stato di ispirazione per il personaggio donna che leggeva la Bibbia, perché anche in quel film c’era una donna che ascoltava musica cristiana tutto il tempo. Per quanto riguarda la politica, la maggior parte delle persone attorno al truck secondo me avrebbero votato per Trump o non avrebbero votato proprio. Le zone rurali sono talmente tanto legate e fedeli al Partito repubblicano che anche se non apprezzano la persona che vuole essere presidente votano comunque repubblicano. The competitors of the Hands On contest in your fictional movie seem to reflect quite well the reality of the American Rush Belt today. At the beginning of the writing process, when you decided who were the characters of the movie and who would try to win the pick-up, did you try to realistically depict the contemporary America? Among Trump and Biden, who would your characters have vote for? Bastian Günther: As I have been living here in Texas for almost twelve years, I think I have a good understanding of the South and of the people who live here, and every day I meet people similar to the ones depicted in my movies, especially in the countryside, but also in Austin. You see these different people, with a lot of different backgrounds. Many of them believe in God, especially in the rural areas the religious dimension is very strong even if there are different churches and different confessions. Surely, I did not want that the characters were only clichés, I wanted that every character felt real, with a story arc and a little background story. Also, the documentary was an inspiration for the character of the woman reading the Bible as she keeps her hand on the truck, because in the documentary appeared a woman who was listening to Christian music all the time. For what it concerns the politics, most of the people around the truck would have voted Trump or would not have voted at all. The rural areas are so Republicans that even if they dislike the person who wants to be president they still vote for the Republican party. They do not want too high taxes, and they do not earn too much, but many of them share this quizzical belief that they might become rich one day or the other one. It is not realistic, it is actually weird after all, but this credence is actually very common. Tu hai una formazione da sociologo, e il tuo film sembra voler esplorare la provincia americana soprattutto da un’ottica sociale. Come e fino a che punto pensi che un film di finzione possa farsi sociologia? Bastian Günther: È vero, ho iniziato degli studi di social sciences ma ho lasciato l’università, era troppo noiosa per me. Io credo che molti film sono e sono stati dei veri e propri saggi di sociologia. Ogni film che si relaziona con persone reali e dà uno sguardo ravvicinato alla questione delle classi è automaticamente un’osservazione sociologica del problema. Vedo molti film che si concentrano su elementi di classe, e da molto tempo. A tal riguardo, una cosa che trovo molto interessante è riflettere dove le persone guardano i film, e quali film. Soprattutto qui negli Stati Uniti hai le due coste, per farla breve hai Los Angeles e New York. Los Angeles e New York fanno film per il loro pubblico, che è formato principalmente da democratici piuttosto acculturati, che non di rado sono anche protagonisti di quegli stessi film. Invece non sono molti i film che riguardano o sono indirizzati alle persone che vivono per così dire nel mezzo, in tutta la parte continentale dell’America, e se sono così spesso giocano molto sui cliché, sulla commedia, prendono un po’ in giro lo slang del Sud, gli atteggiamenti degli abitanti. Sono pochi i film che vogliono raccontare una storia vera su queste regioni e sulle persone che vi abitano. Io penso che One of These Days lo faccia, o almeno provi a farlo. Sarebbe stato un film molto più facile se avessi voluto in qualche modo prendere in giro i protagonisti, ma non era questo quello che volevo. You studied sociology, and your movie seems to explore the American province also on a sociological basis. How and how much do you think that scripted cinema can become sociology? Bastian Günther: Yes, I started studying social sciences, but I quit the university, it was too boring to me. I believe that many films are and have been true essays of sociology. Every movie which deals with real people and gives a close look to the question of social classes is automatically a sociological observation of the problem. I saw many movies concentrating on classes elements, and from a long time. In this regard, I think it is very illuminating to analyze where people do watch movies, and what type of movies do they watch. Here in the U.S., you basically have the coasts, let say Los Angeles and New York. In Los Angeles and New York movies are made for their audiences, which is mainly composed by quite accultured Democrats, who often are also the characters of these movies. On the other hand, there are not many movies about people who live “in the middle”, in the continental region between the two coasts, and, if there are, they are usually cliché-based comedies that make fun a bit of the South slang or of the attitudes of people who live in the countryside. There are not many movies that want to tell a true story about these regions and about people who live there. I think that One of These Days does, or at least tries to. It would have been an easier movie if I wanted somehow make fun of the characters, but that was not what I wanted.
